The circle button on your controller might trigger the ~ key on the keyboard, which can be configured to toggle auto-lock. I've played a little with the auto-lock, and it's actually quite useful. I definitely don't like it mapped to the E (for toggle) and S (for hold) keys on the keyboard. "E" is already used for other things, like landing, and
Initial controller setup/tips/how-to for those not familiar with using “Big Picture Mode”. You need help. Does your controller not work? Do you get frustrated whenever you try to play NO MANS SKY and your controller no work? If so, see below.
In the steamVR settings - controller management - no mans sky - on flight - joystick add "Steer". When you want to use the steering function of the joystick inside the ship just tap the left mouse button of the mouse (if the cursor is on the game window) and they will activate, note that you can even use the mouse itself at the moment to aim
The Plum Gate May 5, 2019 @ 10:15am. If you run your DS4 controller via USB, go into the steam controller options and uncheck everything except generic controller support. I had it set up as the default game controller layout Steam offers with non-Steam games ("Gamepad") and only "Playstation Configuration Support" turned on in General Controller Settings. No issues ever. This was via wired USB, not using DS4Windows at all.

I play NMS directly on my pc in VR and also (downstairs on the couch) via Steam Link with a PS4 controller. The latter worked great before, but since today's update my PS4 controller becomes unresponsive after a (random) few
